The Position

Under the direction of the Director of Student Health Services, College Nurse and/or Nurse Associate to perform the duties of front medical office receptionist and nursing assistant.

Major Responsibilities

EXAMPLES OF OFFICE DUTIES

  1. greeting patients/students at the reception desk and preparing charts (medical

records) as necessary.

  1. answering telephones, making appointments, providing forms, assistance and

information to students, faculty and the general public.

  1. contacting insurance companies, as needed.

  2. preparing and maintaining medical records and reports.

  3. maintaining student insurance records.

  4. providing claim forms for student accident insurance

  5. operating a variety of office equipment including computer, printer, copier and

fax machine.

  1. typing letters. memos, reports and other similar materials to include designing and

producing flyers for promotional events.

  1. maintaining a clean and orderly work environment.

  2. maintaining inventory on all medical forms and supplies needed for medical

records and front reception area.

  1. assembling and distributing incoming and outgoing mail.

  2. collecting fees from students/faculty/staff for fee services as necessary.

  3. training and providing work direction to student workers and hourly help on a

temporary basis.

EXAMPLES OF PATIENT CARE DUTIES

  1. perform venipuncture (phlebotomy) procedure on patients for ordered tests

  2. collect other laboratory specimens as directed by RN or MD.

  3. take patient vital signs to include weight, height, B/P, pulse oximetry, peak flow, body temperature, pulse and respirations. Report abnormal findings to RN, NP or MD

  4. perform urine analysis by chemical strip method and document. Report abnormal findings to RN, NP or MD

  5. complete laboratory requests forms. And prepare specimens to be sent to the laboratory.

  6. assist RN, NP or MD as needed (i.e. performing stand- by for exam, etc.)

  7. organize and clean exam rooms.

    Qualifications

Knowledge:

Fundamentals of office receptionist duties, preferably from medical office experience

Basic knowledge of medical terminology.

Computer knowledge to include data entry and publishing

Basic accounting skills

Telephone etiquette

Knowledge on the operation of computers, printers, copy machine and fax machine.

Oral and written communication, including interview techniques

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation ( CPR ) and first aid training

Laboratory specimen collection procedures (venipuncture)

Medical aseptic principles

Use and maintenance of medical supplies and equipment

Patient teaching and reinforcement of nursing and medical regimen.

Skills and Abilities

Universal precautions

Independently be able to produce letters and memo’s using MS Word or similar Office computer software.

Understand and follow oral and written communications.

Be able to decipher medical records in written format.

Work cooperatively with others.

Independently organize and prioritize work duties.

Be able to function under sometimes-stressful situations.

Communicate effectively in both oral and written formats

Draw blood, collect and prepare laboratory specimens

Perform first aid techniques, such as simple bandaging of wound, applying ice and ace wrapping to extremity and control bleeding

Training and Experience

Current certification in CPR , First Aid and Phlebotomy.

Training received either by formal class work or on the job training in office receptionist duties, preferably medical office work. This training can be on-going, such as a student in a Medical Assistant/ Medical Office Assistant/ licensed vocational nursing or nursing program.

At least one year of experience as a medical office receptionist/assistant experience is required.

Desired Qualifications

Licenses/Certificates/Credentials:

Valid California Drivers’ license

Current CPR certification for Health Care Professional

Current First Aid certification

Phlebotomy certificate

| SELECTED CANDIDATE IS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING PRIOR TO EMPLOYMENT :

Provide a Certificate of Tuberculosis Exam for initial appointment (Note: The certificate must be renewed every 4 years as a condition of continuing employment);

Have fingerprints taken by a Live Scan computer at the district’s expense (Clearance must be received prior to first day of employment); AND

Present original documents for proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
