Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Materials Scientist 3 - Additive Manufacturing in Richland, Washington

Overview

At a time when complex environmental problems are emerging on every front, the Nuclear Sciences Division's staff, capabilities, and facilities are delivering science and technology innovations for the environment, as well as for energy and national security needs. Our diverse work addresses a wide range of national and international challenges, from providing solutions that protect the health of people who must work in hazardous environments, to developing durable new materials, streamlining industrial processes for improved productivity and effectiveness, and delivering new approaches for environmental cleanup. Nuclear Sciences Division capabilities and efforts are focused in three key areas including Environmental Health and Remediation, Nuclear Regulatory, and Nuclear Energy.

Responsibilities

The Nuclear Chemistry and Engineering (NCE) Group is seeking an outstanding materials scientist to support research on the characterization, synthesis, and production of additive manufactured materials used in nuclear processes. This includes the Hanford Site cleanup, river corridor protection, nuclear materials stewardship, non-proliferation missions, the nuclear fuel life cycle, national security missions, energy production, nuclear fuel cycle, tritium production, nuclear fuel fabrication, and irradiated materials characterization.

Will also perform the following duties:

  • Lead the design, build, and operation of additive manufacturing experimental systems.

  • Produce additive manufacturing test specimens.

  • Use these specimens to conduct analysis/data collection, and lead in data reduction and reporting.

  • Identify efforts to develop new procedures and methods for additive manufacturing of fuel and reactor materials, including post-irradiation examination of these specimens.

  • Design, set up, test, and operate materials science and additive manufacturing test equipment/instruments.

  • Lead technical tasks and subtasks, reporting of experimental results via scientific publications and conference proceedings.

  • Work with radioactive, non-radioactive and hazardous materials on the bench top and in fume hoods and glove boxes.

As a PNNL Materials Scientist, the candidate will span fundamental materials science to applied materials engineering. Synthesizes and studies the structures and physical/chemical properties of various natural, synthetic, and composite materials including metals, alloys, ceramics, semiconductors, polymers, rubber, glass, and combinations of these materials. Studies the structures of materials from atomic to large length scales and performs short- and long-term characterization, modeling, or testing of these materials to understand their behavior and determine ways to improve them or develop new materials with specific properties. Develops individual steps and combined processes for manufacturing, joining, finishing, treating, and strengthening materials. Develops computational models of materials that describe structures, properties, and performance of materials. Specific research areas include physics, chemistry, materials science, materials engineering, glass science, ceramic science, metallurgy, manufacturing and process engineering, corrosion science, and polymer science.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-

  • MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience -OR-

  • PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Materials Science, Materials Engineering or Mechanical Engineering preferred, otherwise, a related PhD (e.g., chemical engineering with a direct link in study field and thesis topic to material science or applied material science).

  • Experience with hands-on experience on a variety of advanced manufacturing techniques (e.g., Additive Manufacturing, Photoluminescence, Fused Filament Fabrication).

  • Experience with thermocalc.

  • Experience working in a combination of experimental or modeling materials development tasks.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, a demonstrated ability to work individually and as a team member.

The candidate should have experience with any of the following:

  • XRD, SEM, EBSD, TEM, FIB, Nano hardness measurements, APT.

  • Fabrication of refractory metal alloys used for nuclear cladding and metallic fuel.

  • Casting, cold working, cutting/machining/shearing, polishing, welding/brazing processes.

  • Conducting and evaluating data from mechanical properties testing of irradiated materials including tensile, burst, and hardness.

Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment

  • Candidate will be trained and must perform to Radiation Worker standards (Radiological Worker II), as well as building and project procedures for managing radioactive and hazardous materials.

  • The candidate will be working with radioactive materials and chemicals in laboratories that are in radiological controlled areas, including radiation areas, radioactive material areas, and contamination areas.
