Statement of the Job:

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is seeking an Assistant or Associate Professor of English beginning September 2024. The English program at the University of Maine Presque Isle offers three concentrations: writing, professional communication and journalism, and a general concentration in which students focus on literature and courses in the other concentrations. Minors are offered in writing, professional communication and journalism, English (general) and film.

The successful candidate will bring a demonstrated record of teaching and course development in communication, multimodal journalism, digital media, and professional/workplace writing with a specialization in social media. The teaching load will also include first-year writing and may include upper-level courses in other areas of interest as appropriate. Expertise in digital humanities and film is desired but not required.

This tenure-track position is a full-time, nine-month contract with benefits year-round. Primary teaching responsibilities will include development and delivery of courses in communication, journalism, digital media, and professional/workplace writing, as well as regular delivery of general education curricula.

Responsibilities include:

  • Up to 24 contact hours of teaching per year which may include traditional fall and spring offerings and/or competency-based education (CBE) courses

  • Service to the department, university, and community.

  • Advise students in English programs and concentrations.

  • Recruit students to the English program and its concentrations

  • Advising English majors and serving on 1-2 campus committees is expected.

    The work schedule will be variable based upon teaching schedule and research demands. Work beyond regular hours (which may include nights and weekends) may be necessary in order to meet the requirements of the position. The employee will establish regular office hours on campus, especially during semesters when teaching. Based on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant, the salary range for this full-time academic year Assistant position is $57,806 - $62,500 or for Associate the range is $65,912 - $68,000 plus a 10% employer contribution to the UMS retirement plan.     Qualifications:

    Required:

  • Ph.D. or ABD status in English or Digital Media, Communications or related degree.

  • Demonstrated experience in teaching introductory and/or upper-level courses at the university level.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills, and ability to collaborate with the campus, local, and regional communities.

  • Demonstrated experience or ability to employ high impact teaching practices, multiple forms of formative and summative assessment, and technology that qualitatively improves the learning experience, including on-line teaching methods.

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research that engages undergraduates and can lead to conference presentations, publications, and may garner external funding.

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

    Preferred:

  • 3+ years teaching at the collegiate level (may include as a graduate assistant)

  • 3+ years in a English/digital media/communications or instructional educational, leadership, or research role in higher education

  • Candidate interested in supporting an English club
