Maintenance Worker

Homes for the Homeless (HFH) is searching for an experienced Maintenance Worker for our Families w/ Children facility located in the Hell’s Kitchen area of Manhattan, NY. As the Maintenance Worker, you will play a pivotal role in our organization, maintaining a functional, safe, and comfortable environment for the families and children we house. ABOUT HOMES FOR THE HOMELESS, INC.

Homes for the Homeless, Inc. (HFH) is a non-profit social services organization operating family shelters throughout NYC that serve as a hub of opportunity for families residing in the shelter and those in the neighboring community. On-site programs range from childcare, early childhood education centers, afterschool clubs and programs, and youth recreation activities, such as sports teams, to housing assistance, case management, parenting workshops, career and job vocational training, support groups and substance abuse assistance, and family engagement and recreation events for the whole family.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance to ensure facility systems operate efficiently and the site's physical condition does not deteriorate.

  • Effectively handle service requests and work orders.

  • Assess and repair issues, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and general carpentry.

  • Identifies and reports building deficiencies or needs to the supervisor.

  • Operates and maintains tools and equipment safely and efficiently.

  • Assist with unit inspections.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • Minimum two years of experience in general maintenance.

  • Must know about plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and drywall repairs.

  • Familiar with the proper use of power tools.

  • Knowledge and ability to utilize computer and related technology efficiently.

  • Ability to reach, bend, stoop and frequently lift to 60 pounds.

  • Be able to stand for long periods (up to 9 hours).

  • Capable of performing duties with limited supervision.

  • Availability to work a flexible schedule.
