The Professional Practice Nurse Specialist works closely with Director of Nursing to assure high quality clinical programs and to maintain regulatory compliance within the facility. As part of the nursing management team, the Clinical Coordinator is able to foster teamwork in the nursing department and actively contributes to the successful accomplishment of the facility's goals and mission. Demonstrates advanced verbal and written skills, good organizational skills and interpersonal skills including ability to analyze data, manage time, prioritize, communicate effectively, and problem solve. Nurse Specialist functions in the role of clinical leader to promote, develop, and assist with fostering innovation and excellence in nursing practice throughout the organization.

  1. Assist in the maintenance of clinical integrity and regulatory compliance on the hospital.

  2. Arrange chart audits for clinical oversight, compliance and adherence to the hospital policies and procedures.

  3. Provide guidance in the process of development of action plans with department managers and/or Directors.

  4. Oversight and assessment of patients with restraint and post falls to assure the delivery of safety and high quality nurse care making any necessary recommendations if expectations are not met.

  5. Participate in the orientation of team members; coach staff and ensure adherence to internal policies/standards.

  6. Discuss operational issues, update staff on new/changed regulations and review records/documentation to ensure regulatory and in-house compliance. Assist in Joint commission preparedness.

  7. Participate in performance improvement activities, maintain ongoing clinical knowledge through internal/external training programs, and provide interpretation of knowledge and direction to staff.

  8. Identify clinical problem areas and documents deficiency trends in a proactive approach.

  9. Identify training needs of staff and aids in the process of educating administrative and clinical associate staff in the correction of these deficiencies.

  10. Maintain communication/reporting structure.

  11. Oversees and Promotes Culture Change.

  12. Supports a comprehensive, organized, continuous readiness program to review and identify opportunities for improvement in order to achieve excellence in the quality and safety care, treatment, and services provided to patients.

  13. The tracking and trending of data, aggregating into reports, and facilitating improvement actions.

  14. Serving as leaders, consultants, mentors, and change agents to advance the practice of nursing among nurses in all settings across the organization

  15. Applying specific evidence-based interventions and practice guidelines to direct the care of nursing personnel and other providers of healthcare to improve health outcomes

    1. Leading multidisciplinary groups in an effort to facilitate collaboration with other disciplines and improve outcomes across the continuum of care

    2. Pursuing scientific knowledge and skills to expand the practice of nursing and maintain expert clinical competencies

    3. Collaborates with ancillary departments, staff and physicians to promote appropriate high quality nursing care.

    4. Assisting in coordination of the Magnet Program.

    5. Assuring that Magnet is hardwired into the organization through coordination, education, and consultation with leadership.

    6. Assist in oversight of all deliverables and deadlines including document preparation and submission, site visits, yearly DDCT, interim reports,

    7. NDNQI database management and analysis, and RN engagement survey.

    8. Collaborate with leadership to embed the professional practice model into clinical practice.

    9. Assist in maintaining shared governance and council structure, and mentor clinical staff in leadership skills at the unit and council levels.

    10. Promote and support advancement of nursing practice and innovation through shared governance, practice councils and nursing projects that foster innovation and excellence as well as the formal recognition of nursing innovation and excellence.

    11. In collaboration with clinical and administrative leadership, Clinical Practice Nurse Specialist assumes system-wide responsibility for coordinating all aspects of special projects for the nursing department and ensures that assigned projects are deployed and hardwired into all areas of the organization.

    12. Collaborate with the education team in providing education that is consistent with the UMHC policies, procedures and standards of practice as it relates to new processes implementation.

    13. Prepares the Magnet documentation including collection and submission of key nursing sensitive outcome indicators.

    14. Participates in the development and implementation of the strategic plan for nursing aligned with the strategic plan for UMHC

    15. Collaborates on designing Magnet program strategy.

    16. Works collaboratively with nursing, physician, operational, and ancillary professional leadership to ensure goals of Nursing Professional Practice and compliance and Magnet designation are accomplished.

    17. Assist in maintaining the integration of research and evidence based practice.

    18. Assist in communicating and effectively translating the goals and expectations of Magnet standard of evidence to nursing leaders and direct care nurses.

    19. Provides leadership to the department of nursing in interpretation and compliance with ANCC Magnet Program standards and expectations.

    20. Promotes excellence in nursing practice and research.

    21. Assist in dissemination of best practices both internally and externally.

    22. Leads Professional Practice implementation, and evaluation efforts.

    23. Provides leadership implementation plans and helps coordinate the action plan to address areas in need of improvement.

    24. Serves as a liaison to ensure quality initiatives have strategic alignment with the Magnet standards and expectations.

    25. Benchmarks outcomes and acts as a gatekeeper to ensure Magnet standards and maintained and exceeded.

    26. Provides compelling and focused communication to leaders and staff across the nursing division and the organization to ensure understanding and compliance with Professional Practice, and Magnet standards and expectations.

    27. Provides Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice and policy related information sessions, training, and support for nursing and staff leadership.

    28. Assists with the development of Magnet designation application documents.

    29. Assist in preparation of the Magnet documentation including collection and submission of key nursing sensitive outcome indicators.

    30. Serves as the liaison to the ANCC Magnet office and Magnet list serv.

    31. Assists with recognition awards, and other conferences and award opportunities as identified.

    32. Models the mission, vision, and values of UMHC Nursing

    33. Displays a commitment to the development of a culture of excellence and inclusion throughout all aspects of the Nursing Department.

    34. Works to encourage nursing excellence in the organization and to coordinate the contributions UMHC nurses to the advancement of nursing practice through the Clinical Ladder.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: BSN Required but MSN degree preferred.

Certification and Licensing: Registered Nurse Licensing (RN)

Experience:Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience
