SME Driller in Kalamazoo, Michigan
SME is seeking a regular, full-time Driller. This position will be based out of either our Kalamazoo or Grand Rapids, Michigan offices.
Responsibilities include:
- Work with an assistant Driller to complete assignments using various drilling and sampling techniques, including lifting and other manual work as required.
- Must be able to lift 100-pounds;
- Drive the drill rig or semi-truck and trailer to project sites, which requires a Class A CDL with air brake endorsement;
- Promoting and adhering to safe work practices at all times for yourself, the assistant Driller and others while driving and working at project sites;
- Operating a drill rig to perform geotechnical borings from a few feet deep to more than 100 feet deep;
- Properly maintain the drill rigs and other necessary equipment;
- Troubleshooting and resolving drill rig and equipment problems;
- Performing work outdoors at project sites in a variety of weather conditions typical to Michigan;
- Working with traffic control subcontractors to SME when required for roadway work projects;
- Working safely and alert others to potential safety hazards.
- Wear appropriate personal protection equipment at job sites at all times;
- Traveling to and working out-of-town, overnight projects that are located away from your base of operations (sometimes for extended periods of time;
- Occasional overtime, weekend, and night work will be required to meet our clients needs;
- An excellent driving record and the ability to pass routine background checks and drug tests are required; and
- Working effectively as a team player to meet the needs of our internal and external clients.
Requirements include:
- Work as part of a drilling team or crew.
- Perform subsurface exploration duties using conventional drilling techniques, which may include auger drilling, mud rotary drilling, and/or diamond bit coring techniques.
- Work also includes installation of instrumentation, piezometers and monitoring wells.
- Coordination of work with drilling supervisors, engineers, geologist, project managers and utility locating services.
- Maintain drilling supplies and equipment, including loading and unloading for shop storage or field use.
- Evaluate potential maintenance requirements and coordinate with supervisor to have maintenance items addressed or completed on own.
- Experience in auger, mud rotary and diamond bit rock coring techniques with various types of rotary drill rigs for split-spoon soil sampling, Shelby tube sampling, rock sampling, and installation of instrumentation, piezometers and monitoring wells.
- Capable of reading plans, maps and schematics, along with being familiar with coordinate systems, in order to mark and/or locate points of interest in field on project related sites or alignments.
