UnitedHealth Group National Medical Director, Institutional Value | Remote based in TX in Houston, Texas

Clinical Performance, a national Optum Health team, is seeking an experienced Medical Director to join our growing care transformation efforts. This key executive Physician will provide expertise on population health and clinical operations. Leadership responsibilities include representing the Institutional Clinical Value team in senior executive meetings (e.g., Hospital C-Suite, Market Regional CMO’s), lead reviews and improvements of clinical programs and processes, and drive the strategy, design and implementation of existing and future value-based initiatives and programs.

This is a role that partners with external leaders and requires collaboration and the ability to build relationships across all levels of the organization to ensure goals are met. This physician will be comfortable interacting daily with clinical, business and finance executives, as well as frontline clinicians and operational staff. The successful candidate will be able to not only drive value in existing workstreams, but to build and expand our portfolio of solutions in additional domains.

Primary Responsibilities

· Hospital engagement and relationship management

o Collaborate with hospital-based physicians and other stakeholders (e.g., nurses, case managers, social workers) to coordinate care transitions from the outpatient and institutional environments

o Deliver targeted education to Optum’s hospital-based physicians on best practices spanning documentation and care coordination

o Provide strategic direction to navigate conversations and drive alignment across multiple stakeholder groups (Optum Health, Hospitals, SNF’s, Home Health Vendors, etc.)

o Own the ongoing relationship with key stakeholders at multiple levels across hospital systems, vendors, and Optum Health businesses

· Clinical leadership for operational teams

o Lead JOC’s with medical group partners and hospital-based stakeholders

o Establish and maintain evidence-based standards for clinical documentation and care coordination activities

o Navigate professional body guidelines, published literature, coding rules and regulations to provide thought leadership and recommended actions to hospital-based physicians

o Develop standard operating procedures specific to high-frequency chief complaints and diagnoses

o Perform longitudinal outcome reviews and quality assurance for operational teams

· Partnership with market clinical leaders

o Builds/maintains/manages market stakeholder relationships across multiple layers and functions

o Lead physician-to-physician discussions and problem-solving with medical group leaders, hospitalists, specialists, market CMO’s, and clinical leaders from market vendors and service providers

o Guide analytical efforts to identify and quantify new opportunities to improve the value of services delivered in the institutional setting to reduce low-value utilization while also improving quality, patient and provider experience

o Proactively work with team to synthesize and communicate findings and bring together multiple stakeholders to deploy programs

o Plans and facilitates regional Steering Committee meetings with clinical leaders

· Emotional maturity for effective change management

o Establish strong and lasting, trust-based relationships within team and external partners

o Foster exemplary teamwork and strengthen a culture of continuous improvement and accountability

o Take initiative and self-start attitude to approach problems with energy and passion

o Demonstrate preference for working in a tight-knit team environment with diverse professional groups

o Utilize a strong fact base to influence and lead physicians and support staff to implement change programs

· Ensures overall program success

o Reducing barriers for program implementation teams, including anticipating and responding to potential roadblocks

o Active problem solving to meet evolving challenges in a highly dynamic environment

o Distributing performance management reporting to market leaders and synthesizing information for adjustment and optimization

o Conducts deep dive program reviews with relevant internal and/or external stakeholders to identify opportunities for continuous improvement

o Works collaboratively to inform new, innovative, or complimentary program ideas at scale

o Collaborates with and oversees efforts of other team members to align on meeting expectations, material preparation, and division of roles and responsibilities

o Interacts with senior management by providing thoughtful analysis on key decision points to drive initiatives forward

o Demonstrates understanding of budgeting and forecasting tools, terminology, and processes

Required Qualifications:

  • M.D. or D.O. degree

  • Current unrestricted license to practice medicine

  • Board certified in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Critical Care or another specialty with hospital-based practice

  • 3+ years of clinical experience in a hospital-based setting

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA, MPH or other advanced degree

  • Innovative thought process and problem-solving skills

  • Executive level business acumen

  • Ability to influence without authority

  • Leadership experience managing a group of hospital-based physicians (e.g., Lead Hospitalist, ED Medical Director)

  • Demonstrates understanding of healthcare finance and has worked in data intensive and metrics driven environment

  • General knowledge of clinical programs, trends and medical management, medical care delivery systems, utilization management, disease management, analytics quality management, contracting, provider relations and customer service

  • Ability to successfully operate in a dynamic and changing environment

  • Ability to implement complex programs and monitor implementation and necessary modifications

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in an expedient and decisive manner

  • Excellent presentation and persuasion skills; ability to speak clearly and lead discussions with senior executives and large groups

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong appetite for learning
