About the Department

One of the first departments founded at the University of Chicago was the Department of Chemistry. Since then, The University of Chicago has been the recipient of more than 73 Nobel Prize recipients, 15 of which came from the Department of Chemistry. Our current faculty have considerable strength in inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, as well as in interdisciplinary research that delves into biology, physics, and materials science.

Job Summary

The principal contribution of a Laboratory Technician to assist the leading scientists in the group of DNA and RNA modifications in the Chuan He Lab. The He Lab develops novel genome-wide epigenetic and epitranscriptomic mapping technologies with direct translational applications. This position will assist in conducting research includes molecular biology. The ideal candidate will conduct research activities to learn and master RNA and DNA modification sequencing methods in order to process samples for sequencing. In this position, lab tech will also assist in cell biology techniques as needed.

Responsibilities

• Assisting lab members in preparing and conducting experiments.
• Follow established procedures and provide assistance to supervisor with research projects.
• Performing basic laboratory techniques.
• Isolation of DNA and RNA samples.
• Preparation of samples for sequencing.
• Serves as a resource for collecting data in the He Lab.
• Assists in analyzing data. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts, and other documents.
• Collaborates in laboratory organization and reagents and supplies stock maintenance.
• Collects and enters data. Assists in analyzing data. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.
• Assists with the installation, sets up and performs experiments; interacting with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.
• Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).

Education:

• B.S in Biology, Chemistry, Molecular Biology or Biochemistry.

Technical knowledge skills:

• Molecular biology and genomics.

• Background in molecular biology, plant biology (or related fields).

• Strong organizational skills.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Working Conditions:

• Wet Laboratory environment.
