Job Summary

Provides overall direction, management and coordination for all activities and services within the Department of Student Publications. Provides strong journalistic and business direction for student media and career preparation for student employees.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement planning and fiscal functions for the department within UTA guidelines; including department budget, vendor contracts, and assessment and planning documents.

  • Oversee and assess all departments within Student Publications, encompassing newsroom, photography, advertising, graphics/production, and business, while concurrently coordinating the UTA Student Publications Committee.

  • Collaborate with professional staff to manage student staff in all aspects within Student Publications, from recruitment to administration, while also representing UTA at professional events, student media engagements, orientations, interest sessions, and school visits to actively recruit potential students.

  • Foster relationships departments and programs across the UTA campus.

  • Develop and implement Student Publications operating policies and procedures that establish and maintain high journalism, advertising, professional, and ethical standards for Student Publications department.

  • Participate in university committees, including the Student Publications Committee and Student Affairs Leadership Team, while ensuring implementation of UTA internal controls within the department and attending mandatory trainings on budgets, assessment, and departmental management.

  • Plan and coordinate projects essential for departmental success, including Student Publications Alumni reunions, student recognition events, skills workshops, and departmental training events.

  • Maintain engagement with the Shorthorn Nation, Alumni network, ensuring regular updates and generating content for a quarterly Alumni Newsletter.

  • Select, train, supervise, evaluate, and provide professional development opportunities for professional staff.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least five (5) years relevant experience in professional news media within the last ten (10) years.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Knowledge of press law and journalism required. Strong conflict resolution and management skills needed.

  • Demonstrated management experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree with a minimum of three (3) years media management experience in an institution of higher education.

  • Equivalent experience in media management (editor, news director, etc.) could be considered.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Strong understanding of professional print and digital newsroom workflows; demonstrated supervisory skills in multi-platform news environment; ability to manage and interpret market and readership data; experience with Peoplesoft system helpful. Knowledge in all supervised areas, including newsroom, advertising, production, business and marketing. Adaptability, creativity, and resourcefulness. Ability to coach and provide constructive feedback is important

Other Requirements

Position is rendered security sensitive, and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.

Working Conditions

Exposure to standard office conditions. Repetitive use of keyboard at a work station. Use of manual dexterity. Climbing of stairs, Security sensitive; criminal background check conducted. Will require travel, evenings and weekend hours, on occasion.
