As an airline, safety is our most important principle. And our Corporate Safety team is responsible for making sure safety is top of mind in every action we take. From conducting flight safety investigations and educating pilots on potential safety threats to implementing medical programs and helping prevent employee injuries, our team is instrumental in running a safe and successful airline for our customers and employees.

This position is responsible for the operational and administrative functions of the Department of Transportation (DOT) and FAA required Drug and Alcohol Abatement program for United's 55,000 safety sensitive employees. Serves as the centralized point of communication between the company and regulatory authorities in partnership with current company DER. Oversees the development and maintenance of United's DOT/FAA and Company drug and alcohol policies and programs. Assists and supports all levels of management with interpretation and execution of drug/alchohol policies and regulations. Partners with external vendors and United's Medical Review Officer to ensure accurate execution of program. This position also coordinates with the company regulatory responsibilities in collaboration with the company DER.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a staff of drug testers, administrative staff, auditor and trainers in daily operations to ensure compliance with the annual DOT/FAA random testing goals of safety sensitive employees each year

  • Be available 24/7 to the operations leadership and NOC to intervene and direct actions of company officials during drug/alcohol related situations in partnership with company DER

  • Ensure compliance with all drug and alcohol testing programs with FAA/DOT regulations, Company policy, state laws, labor agreements and external contracts (e.g., USPS)

  • Ensure United performance as measured by the annual FAA audit of random drug testing compliance

  • Partner with company DER to represent United to DOT/ FAA government authorities for all issues related to drug and alcohol abatement, including oversight of collection sites, Medical Review Officer practices and certification of testers

  • Partner with technology to develop, integrate and manage the drug abatement technology systems and required communicate with Human Resource and divisional scheduling applications

  • Liaison with and provide training to operations groups, the legal department and human resources to align with all legal process requirements for both the DOT/FAA policy and the Company's policy

Qualifications

What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's degree or 4 years of relevant work experience in Certified Designated Employer Representative

  • 4+ years of experience leading enterprise-wide drug and alcohol programs and 2+ years’ experience leading direct reports

  • Working knowledge of 49 CFR Part 40

  • Working knowledge of 14 CFR Part 120

  • Critical thinking ability and strong knowledge of process analysis

  • Ability to analyze, improve and communicate complex processes to all levels of United leadership

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position

  • Proven problem solving and organizational abilities

  • Master's degree

  • 2-4 years experience managing an enterprise-wide drug and alcohol program for a major airline

  • MS Project, database management and analysis

  • Resolution skills

  • Project Management Experience
